12/7/25 SERMON NOTES 1THESSALONIANS - WEEK7 | Tyler Kirby

Psalm 115:1 NLT “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name goes all the glory…”

1John 4:4 NLT “the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

Joshua 1:9 NIV “Be strong and courageous…for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

1Thes. 4:16-17 NIV “16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.”

1Thes. 5 NIV

“1Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2for you know very well that the day of the Lord (consistently referred to as a time of divine judgment) will come like a thief in the night.”

Here it refers to the judgment that will begin when Christ comes the second time. The rapture is not the 2nd coming of Christ.

The ‘2nd coming’ happens after the 7 years tribulation.

3While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness (‘darkness’ - describes a life apart from God or opposed to God) so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.

Col.1:13 NIV “13For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

6So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath (divine punishment) but to receive salvation (to make safe; to deliver from a threat) through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

     Paul moves from …

          -comforting the believers

          -warning unbelievers

          -expectation of believers

12Now we ask you, brothers and sisters…acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish (teach, instruct) you. 13Hold them in the highest regard (think well of them; consider them valuable; give weight to their words) in love because of their work...

-John Piper “The church flourishes where leaders are honored for the sake of the gospel."

-Billy Graham “A pastor should be supported and honored, not because he is perfect, but because he points us to the One who is.”

...Live in peace with each other. 14And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, (These two words are one Greek word, meaning - to rebel against the natural order; to evade one’s obligations)

encourage (a friendly address; to warn; to console; to inspire with courage; to spur on) the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,

“Non-retaliation for personal wrongs is perhaps the best evidence of personal Christian maturity.”

strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. 16Rejoice always...

The character of a Christ-follower is dependent on the fullness of the Spirit in them.

17pray continually...

Prayer is a conversation with God. Keep your conversation with God going all day.

18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:28 NLT “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

19Do not quench the Spirit. (to douse the Spirit’s fire or resist His influence.)

     Ways we quench the Spirit

-Participating in what God has already said “no” to.

-Living with unrepentant sin in your life

          -Neglecting worship & fellowship

“When believers isolate or grow apathetic, fire becomes ashes.”

20Do not treat prophecies (to speak under the divine influence of the Spirit) with contempt (to despise) 21but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22reject (to abstain; be distant) every kind of evil. 23May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it. 25Brothers and sisters, pray for us. 26Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss. 27I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters. 28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
