Nourished by Giving
“The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” - Proverbs 11:25 (NLT)
When we think of spiritual nourishment, our minds naturally go to the essentials… reading God’s Word, praying, worshiping, and gathering with other believers…. These are vital practices that feed our faith and anchor our souls.
But Scripture shows us that receiving truth is only half of God’s design for our growth….
Spiritual nourishment doesn’t happen only by what we take in… but also by what we give out for God.
1. Nourishment Comes Through Obedience…
Jesus said… “My food… is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work” (John 4:34).
For Jesus… doing the Father’s will wasn’t a burden… it was food. It sustained Him… strengthened Him… and satisfied Him.
In the same way… our souls are energized when we obey God, serve others, and act in faith.
We are spiritually fed not just by hearing the Word, but by living it.
2. Nourishment Comes Through Serving Others
When you serve, encourage, give, or lift someone’s burden, something supernatural happens… you’re refreshed even as you pour out.
Have you ever walked away from helping someone and thought… “I needed that more than they did”?
That’s spiritual nourishment at work.
3. Nourishment Comes Through Generosity of Heart
The early church grew strong not only because they “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching” (Acts 2:42)… but because they shared their lives…. giving, supporting, meeting needs, and encouraging constantly.
We grow when we give….
Give your time → God strengthens your purpose.
Give your gifts → God sharpens your calling.
Give your compassion → God softens your heart.
Give your resources → God expands your faith.
Nourishment Comes Through Overflow, Not Just Intake…
A river that only receives becomes stagnant.
The Christian life is meant to flow.
If we only take in—sermons, Scripture, worship—but never pour out, our walk becomes dull, lifeless, and heavy. But when intake turns into overflow, our spiritual life comes alive again.
Lord, thank You for feeding my soul through Your Word… Your Spirit… and Your people. Teach me to grow not only by what I receive but also by what I give. Make me a vessel that You can pour through… refreshing others and being refreshed myself. Help me find nourishment in obedience… strength in serving… and joy in generosity.
