2-20-2026 | Prayer and Fasting Invite the Holy Spirit

"And when you fast, don't make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get.  But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face.  Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. - Matthew 6:16-18 NLT

There are moments when life feels stuck... like you’ve been pushing on a door that won’t budge... You’ve prayed... you’ve waited... you’ve tried to stay faithful... but something still feels closed... heavy... resistant.

In seasons like that... God often invites His people into a deeper posture... prayer and fasting....

Fasting doesn’t earn God’s attention... He already loves you... And it doesn’t twist His arm... He’s already good... Fasting is a way of saying... “Lord... I’m making room...”

Fasting is setting aside something legitimate to seek Someone greater...

It’s not about punishing the body... it’s about quieting the noise so your spirit can hear again.

When we pray and fast... we create space for the Holy Spirit to move in fresh ways... Not because the Spirit was absent... but because we become more yielded... more attentive... more aligned....

Fasting humbles the heart... It exposes what’s been controlling us... It strengthens spiritual hunger... And in that surrendered place... the Holy Spirit often brings clarity... conviction... comfort... power... and direction.

Prayer and fasting also “open doors” because they position us for spiritual breakthrough... Some doors open through wisdom... Some open through obedience... But some doors... especially the ones locked by fear... bondage... oppression... division... or hardened hearts... open when the church and the believer press in with focused dependence on God...

“Fasting is a declaration... “This isn’t just natural... I need heaven’s help.”

Isaiah 58 reminds us that biblical fasting isn’t only personal... it reshapes how we live.

True fasting looses chains... lifts burdens... restores relationships... and turns us outward in love... When prayer and fasting lead us to compassion and obedience... God promises guidance... strengthening... and restoration... like a garden that stays watered even in dry places.

If you’re facing a closed door today... whether it’s a decision... a relationship... a battle in your mind... or a longing in your spirit... consider that the invitation may not be to strive harder... but to surrender deeper.... Prayer and fasting aren’t shortcuts... They’re doorways... And often... on the other side of that doorway is a renewed awareness of the Holy Spirit.
