7-24-2026 | Pursuing delight in God when the heart is numb.
O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. - Psalm 63:1
There are seasons in the Christian life when God seems near… His Word feels alive… and worship rises naturally from the heart…. But there are also dry seasons… times when prayer feels heavy.. Scripture feels quiet..and the soul feels numb.
In those moments… many believers quietly wonder…
What is wrong with me?
Why don’t I feel what I used to feel?
Dry seasons are not always signs of rebellion…. Sometimes they are seasons of weariness... grief... waiting... spiritual warfare... or deep refining.
“A numb heart does not always mean an absent God…. Often times it is in these very places that God teaches us to seek Him not only for emotional comfort… but for who He is.”
David did not write the words in Psalm 63 from a place of abundance… but from a wilderness….
His longing for God became sharper in the dry place…. He was not pretending satisfaction… he was expressing hunger….
That is important…. God does not ask us to fake delight…. He invites us to bring Him our thirst.
When the heart feels numb… pursuing God may look less like overflowing emotion and more like steady surrender….
It may mean opening your Bible when you feel nothing…
It may mean whispering a tired prayer…
It may mean sitting quietly before the Lord and simply saying…“I want to want You again.”…. Even that is a holy prayer.
Our pursuit of God in dry seasons is not sustained by our feelings alone…. It is sustained by truth…. God is still worthy when He feels distant…. His love has not weakened because your emotions have…. His promises do not fade with your passion…. Jesus remains the same… tender... faithful... and near to the brokenhearted.
“Sometimes we chase the feeling of God rather than God Himself.”
But dry seasons can purify our love…. They reveal whether we are seeking His hand or His face… His gifts or His presence….
In mercy... God may allow dryness not to destroy desire… but to deepen it…. He teaches us to hunger for Him in a way comfort never could.
If you are in a dry season today… do not give up…. Numbness is not the end of your story…. Keep placing yourself where grace flows…
