8-12-2026 | Fan or Follower?

Is Jesus Lord of your life, or only an accessory to it? 

Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, Jesus said, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. - Mark 8:34 

There is a sobering difference between admiring Jesus and actually following Him…. A fan is impressed by Jesus… A follower is transformed by Him… A fan likes His teachings when they are comforting… A follower obeys Him even when it is costly… A fan adds Jesus to life... A follower surrenders life to Jesus…..  That is the question we must honestly ask ourselves…  

“Have I truly surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus Christ… or have I simply made Him a spiritual accessory?” 

Jesus never called people to casual association…. He never invited anyone to simply applaud His miracles… quote His words… or wear His name while keeping control of their own lives…. He said... “Follow Me.”  

That call is not shallow…. It is not sentimental…. It is a call to die to self... to repent… to submit... to surrender… and to live under His rule. 

“Many want Jesus as Savior… but not as Lord…. They want His peace… but not His authority…. They want His promises… but not His commands…. They want a crown without a cross… blessing without brokenness… and eternity without surrender.” 

But the gospel does not present Christ in pieces…. Jesus is not available to us in customized portions…. He is Lord…. If Jesus is only present in your life when it is convenient… then He is not Lord…  He is being treated like an accessory…. If prayer only happens when there is a crisis… if obedience only happens when it does not cost comfort… if church attendance has replaced genuine repentance… then it is time to stop pretending and start kneeling. 

The tragedy is that it is possible to look devoted outwardly while remaining untouched inwardly…. It is possible to sing about surrender and still resist God in private…. It is possible to call Jesus “Lord” and still let pride... lust... ambition... unforgiveness... and self-will sit on the throne of the heart….  

"Not everyone who calls out to me, 'Lord! Lord!' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.” - Matthew 7:21 

“Real surrender says… “Jesus… not my will… but Yours…. Not my plans… but Yours…. Not my reputation… but Your glory. 

So ask yourself honestly… Do I follow Jesus only when it benefits me?... Do I obey Him only when it feels safe?... Have I invited Him into my life… but never handed Him control of it?... Am I a fan of Jesus… or a follower of Christ? 

Jesus does not want to be part of your life…. He is your life…. He is not an accessory to be worn…. He is Lord to be obeyed…. He is not asking for a place…. He is claiming the throne. 

Do not settle for admiration without obedience…. Do not confuse inspiration with transformation.  

Lay down the image… the performance… the excuses… and the divided heart….. Come to Jesus fully…. Not as a fan in the crowd… but as a follower at His feet. 

Because in the end… the safest place is not near Jesus…. It is under His Lordship.
