Using a dull ax requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That's the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed. -  Ecclesiastes 10:10

A knife is made to cut…. That’s its purpose…. But even the finest blade… hand-forged… expensive... perfectly balanced… will eventually dull if it’s used... ignored... or left sitting too long…. It won’t stop being a knife…  but it will stop doing what it was made to do.

That’s a picture of discipleship.

Jesus didn’t call us just to “believe” in a distant way… He called us to follow Him….

“A true disciple is someone who stays close enough to the Master to be shaped by Him…. And just like a blade… the disciple doesn’t stay sharp by accident.”

A knife doesn’t become dull in one moment…. It happens slowly… little by little… through daily friction….  The same is true spiritually…. Not always through big sin… but through quiet drift… a neglected prayer life… a Bible that stays closed… worship that turns into routine… a heart that grows less responsive.

Before long… we still look the same on the outside… but we don’t “cut” like we used to.

  • Less compassion

  • Less courage

  • Less conviction

  • Less hunger for God

  • Less power to resist temptation

Sharpening is intentional…

No one sharpens a knife by staring at it…. You sharpen it by putting it to the stone… again and again…. It takes time…. It takes pressure…. It takes consistency.

That’s what the Lord does with His disciples.

Sometimes He sharpens us through His Word… correcting... training... exposing what’s dull…. Sometimes He sharpens us through prayer… realigning our heart with His voice…. Sometimes He sharpens us through obedience… especially when it costs us something…. And sometimes He sharpens us through trials… where life grinds on us… and God refines us.

“Sharpening isn’t punishment... It’s preparation.”

Polishing removes what dulls… Polishing is repentance…

A sharp disciple is useful… because a sharpened disciple… speaks with grace and truth… loves with sincerity… serves with joy… resists sin with strength… and brings light into dark places….

Not because they’re “better”… but because they’ve stayed near the One who sharpens.

So we must… Stay on the stone… If you want to remain a true disciple… don’t wait until you feel dull to return to God…. Make sharpening a lifestyle…. And daily come back to…. the Word (to align your mind)… prayer (to warm your heart)… worship (to lift your focus)… obedience (to strengthen your walk)… and repentance (to keep you clean).

Daily time with God… truly surrendered… can keep the edge keen.
