9-23-2026 | Learning from the Past… Living in the Present
I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. - Philippians 3:12-14
The past can be a powerful teacher… but it was never meant to be our permanent home….
God allows us to remember yesterday so we can gain wisdom... humility... and gratitude…. We learn from our failures... grow through our pain... and cherish the testimony of how God carried us through…. The past holds lessons… but it should not hold us hostage….
Too many people are stuck reliving old mistakes... old wounds... old disappointments... or even old victories…. But when we stay chained to what was… we can miss what God is doing now.
Paul understood this…. He had a past full of regret… but also a past full of religious accomplishment…. Yet he said he was forgetting what was behind and pressing toward what was ahead….
Why?… Because… Paul knew that dwelling on the past… whether good or bad… could keep him from fully embracing God’s purpose in the present.
Sometimes we hold onto guilt… and it whispers… “God can’t use you after what you’ve done.” …. But God is not limited by your history…. He is a Redeemer…. He takes broken chapters and writes fresh beginnings.
To move forward does not mean pretending the past never happened…. It means allowing God to heal it… teach through it… and then lead you beyond it.
“When you surrender yesterday to Him… you make room for His strength today and His promises tomorrow.”
God wants to use you fully in the present…. He wants your attention... your faith... your obedience... and your willingness now…. And He is already preparing things ahead that require you to keep moving with Him….
“You cannot walk into your future while planting both feet in the past.”
Remember…
Your past may explain you… but it does not define you….
In Christ… your future is still full of purpose.
