9-7-2026 | Appearance vs. Obedience
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses. So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don't follow their example. For they don't practice what they teach. They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden. "Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels. And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called 'Rabbi.' "Don't let anyone call you 'Rabbi,' for you have only one teacher, and all of you are equal as brothers and sisters. And don't address anyone here on earth as 'Father,' for only God in heaven is your Father. And don't let anyone call you 'Teacher,' for you have only one teacher, the Messiah. The greatest among you must be a servant. But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. - (Matthew 23:1-12.)
Jesus speaks very plainly in Matthew 23…. He warns the crowds and His disciples about the religious leaders who knew how to look holy… but did not live holy…. They taught the law… but they did not obey it…. They placed heavy burdens on others while refusing to carry those same burdens themselves…. Their religion was polished on the outside… but pride and self-promotion were working underneath it all.
That is the danger Jesus exposes…
“It is possible to have the appearance of devotion without the heart of obedience.”
The Pharisees loved recognition…. They wanted the best seats... public honor… and impressive titles…. Their spiritual lives had become more about being seen than being submitted….
Jesus was not merely correcting manners… He was confronting motives…. He was showing that God is not impressed by outward performance when inward humility is missing.
This passage is a mirror for all of us…. We may not wear long robes or seek titles… but we can still drift into spiritual hypocrisy…. We can post about faith... speak Christian language... serve publicly… and still neglect private obedience…. We can want to be admired for being “godly” more than we want to actually please God…. We can expect more from others than we require from ourselves….
Jesus points us to a different way…. humility.
“The greatest among you shall be your servant” (Matthew 23:11).
In God’s kingdom… greatness is not measured by applause... platform... or appearance…. It is measured by surrender… service… and obedience.
“The life that honors God is not the one that draws the most attention… but the one that bows the lowest before Him.”
God is not asking us to look righteous…. He is calling us to be obedient…. He is not asking for polished image management…. He wants hearts that tremble at His Word and lives that match our confession….
“True spirituality is not about being noticed by people… it is about being faithful before God.”
So the question is…
Are you more concerned with reputation than repentance?
Are you more focused on being seen than being surrendered?
Are you more eager to instruct others than obey God yourself?
Jesus does not expose hypocrisy to shame us… but to free us…. He invites us away from empty religion and into genuine… humble obedience.
